I have, what sounds like, the same noise and thought it may be the water pump or the plastic idler pulleys for the belt (the tell-tale sign of white residue around the water pump shaft indicated it was due to be replaced, so I also had the two belts, and plastic idler pulleys replaced as well-another possible source of the noise). This didn't stop the whining noise, and then I started to suspect the transmission. The master tech. at the BMW shop told me the CATs were defected (fortunately, the car has a warranty)and could likely be the cause of the noise (as well as causing a variety of different noises). The master tech. did tell me that the heat generated by plugged CAT's can ruin a transmission if the car is driven aggressively and for long distances. I asked him if the transmission fluid should be changed (as it has could have been getting excessive heat from the plugged CATs) and he told me the transmission will fail way before the trans.-fluid would need replacing from heat damage (hence, "fill-for-life"). Another tell-tale sign (which I have) the CATs are bad is a rattling noise (mine is an early E-38 with ceramic-honey comb CATs) .Let us know what you find.
