The grilles are plastic coated with chrome plating. I think it is possible to blacken the chrome with a solvent but I can't recall which one. Try asking a plating shop for advice. If they won't help, then try a few that you have lying around the house from painting etc.. If this won't work worst case, you lightly scuff the chrome with sandpaper and paint them out.
