...the seller may simply tell you to pound sand and look for another, less educated buyer.
Myself, having purchaced a 95' 740i with 73K miles, wish that I would have looked for another, newer vehicle or one with less miles. My first year's expenses (I will exclude the M-Parallel rims and Pilot Sport tires....my choice) for repairs was somewhere in the range of $1300. Mind you that this is $1300 in parts, I have done all of the work myself.
Depending on what service was done on the car already, you could be on the cusp of lots of repair bills as the car goes through a "mini mid life crisis" or if the majority of these repairs have been done, you could have a trouble free machine for quite a few thousand miles.

I would push to get the service history for the car, or at least the recipts of the major repairs.

Regards,
Greg

Not sure about the tranny, however the timing chain is not something you need to worrry about. There is a hydraulic tensioner on the chain that makes up for any chain stretch over time.
Off the top of my head, here is a short list of problematic systems/items that should be or could be approaching the end of their service lives:

Catylic Converters
Lower Control arms / tie rods
Radiator
Water Pump / thermostat housing
Instrument cluster (missing pixel problem)

I am sure that there are others that can add to this list.

I am buying a car that has 97K miles. The short block was replaced by BMW at the 31K mark, it now has 66k miles on the new short block. The car is approaching the 100K miles service. Do you guys know what major changes/replacement are to be made on this car on the 100k mark? I am worried about the transmission, timing belt or chain on this car? Anything else that requires a check up for the 100k milestone?

Excellent! Ok, I think that is a lot to pay for after taking ownership. Can I can make these as a negotiating or bargaining point? Thanks y'all!
