I took the advise of an earlier post and bought a toggle switch from Home Depot with "on" and "off" indicated so that I would know what position it was in when I performed the reset (some don't have the indicators). I also bought a 12" piece of heavy gage wire. Cut the wire in half and expose about 1/2 inch of the wire on each end of both pieces and attach one end of each to the screw down on either end of the toggle.

Now, with the key out of the ignition, put one wire in position 7 and the other in position 19 with the toggle in off position. Turn the ignition to position 1 then go to the front of the car and flip the toggle to on for 12 seconds.

Go back to the ignition, turn it off then on again and the lights will be reset!

Parts cost me less than $4 !!!

Good luck,

David

Hey guys,

Is there any way to reset the service/oil lights on my '97 740 il? I saw something at unofficialbmw.com about grounding the number 7 pin on the diagnostic connector. I tried this (praying that I wasn't about to labotomize my bimmer) and nothing happened (good or bad). Will I have to buy a reset tool? If so which is best. Thanks for any feedback.
