Check your aux fan. It may have seized, and when you put the A/C on, it fried the resistor(s).
The smoke could have come from outside, even with the system on MAX. It takes some finite time for the dampers to close, so it may have been sucked in during that time.

Turned on the Max AC yesterday in my '98 iL and immediately filled the car with nasty smoke smell (reminds me of fried resistor). There was also faint white smoke coming from vents. I shut the HVAC down quick.

Since the Max AC puts the system on recirc, the stink was inside the vents.

Thoughts before I go to the stealer?
