I can't off hand think of what scenario would cause a 'clunk' or 'gong' but the cats and mufflers do get very hot and could be causing a sound when water gets somewhere it isn't supposed to be. ??

No. I can go for several days and not hear anything then it happens right out of the blue, generally on undulating road. The sound seems to come from the boot, but it's been stripped down several times. The sound is a loud metallic gong. I though perhaps something might be loose in the fuel tank, but it generally only happens when wet.
