Rear strut replacement (archive)

I am thinking about changing my rear struts - well needing to really as the top rear strut (bushes?)mounts are a little noisy and this was picked up at its last service.
Can I fit these myself without having to compress the springs?

Woudl it be silly to fit only new rear lowering struts in a different make - I think you guys recommend the HD ones? and do the front later once my bank balance recovers from the recent service & tyres?
