Doug,
I didn't upgrade from any previous model but had the dealer install an 8000 in my 98 740il. Works great. The only bit that they couldn;t get going was the airbag deployement auto-911 and the BMW Assist. Besides those (don't need either), it is golden.

I hope there is an upgrade to the Motorola v60 one day...
