Good luck on this one. I have a 1995 740i and it had a significant weeping from the thermostat housing. When you remove the houseing, the bottom left bolt (looking at the housing from over the right fender) is a bear to remove and replace on my model at least. I ended up purchasing a 1/4 breaker bar and had to improvise in order to get the correct purchase on the bolt. I also recommend replacing these bolts if you have many miles on yours.

Use only BMW coolant, 50/50.
The vacumm hose to the manifold also runs near the thermostat houseing so be aware you may need to remove a couple of clamps and rotate it away.

Last and most annoying, there is a bleeder somewhere towards the front of the manifold that allows you to let the air out of the system once you have filled it up, warmed it up, cooled it down, checked and topped fluid while it is level and find that the diagnostic display won't quit warning you to check coolant level. Had that one done by my mechanic as I didn't know about the air bubble so I'm not exactly sure where the bleeder is.

Ciao

Hello Friends:

I'm getting ready to dive into a water pump swap on my "new to me" car. Any tips other than, change the thermostat and housing as well as hoses, while I'm in there?

Anything to be cautious of?

Thanks for everyones great responses to my questions.

I think I screwed up my rely to Aleki question about color. The machine is dark green with tan leather. I love it.

Thanks Dave Hughes
