I have now run into at least 5 E38s ('98-'01) with cats that have had to be replaced. Key indicator is inexplicable sluggishness in pick-up....remember that the replacement is covered under the BMW emissions warranty (8/80 or 7/70 if in CA). Please have them checked ASAP. One '99 had cats that had been described as 'mash' by an independent and in the worst shape ever seen. Its a $1500+ job outside of warranty!

Also, make sure that the dealer verifies that the exhaust has not been damaged and notes that on the repair sheet...BMW will balk at repairing exhausts becuase technically they are not covered under the emissions warranty but if the damage to the exhausts is as a result of the failure of the cats, raise a big stink and that oughta work....
