From my general research, this is what i've discovered:
1. If you live in California, due to a recent statute, there are very strict requirements for these companies to meet. I don't know the whole story, but I can only assume that these companies were gouging us Californians in some respect.. Some companies now refuse to insure California residents at all and some make no mention of any restrictions. I suggest inquiring whether they are in compliance with California's new law.
2. Many of these companies do not offer "bumper-to-bumper" coverage for older vehicles or "premium" vehicles like our e38. The best they will offer is a type of limited coverage which essentially covers internally lubricated components of the engine, tranny, etc. It is also safe to say that almost none of the electronic components, e.g. displays/pixels/computer, etc, are covered.
3. Some companies offer a "refund" at the end of the term you purchase if you don't use any of the contract. In this respect, it's almost risk free.. look for this..
4. There is usually a waiting period of 3-6 months before you can actually make a clalim on your contract.. keep this in mind..
5. The price of the contracts vary all over the place.. usually due to subtle differences in coverage.. watch out for them. The coverage lists are "closed" in that, if it's not listed, it's not covered.
6. Some companies additionally require the use of oil additives to the likes of Prolong, etc.. some people think these cause more harm than good.. watch out for this provision.
I am still searching for a warranty because I'm concerned about: radiator problem (probably ready to go at any time), tranny, and the big one: the engine block. I have the M60 defective engine block and BMWNA refuses to help me.. so i need something to protect me before my car turns into the biggest paperweight in the world. :(
Feel free to email me if you want specific links and let me know what you come up with so we can swap info.
hope that helps..
