| Message: | | I will warn that any swap is a huge ordeal, and this one sounds really serious. I'm doing a '91 m42 from the 318is in my '76 '02. It's been a bear and it's only a 4 cylinder. I've had to change to rack and pinion steering just to get it to fit. Consider how the transmission will fit the tunnel. I've had to massage a bit, but no cutting. Engine mounts and trans mounts will be tasks. Fitting a sufficient radiator into the small area is difficult; I've used a new stock m42 radiator, and still have issues to align hoses, fan, auxilary fan, et al. You will need driveshaft and a stronger rear end, consider how you will convert the speedo. Consider how you will connect the heater hoses, how to get the fuel; I found the 318is intank pump with the level sensor drops perfectly into the same hole as the original '02 level sensor did, extending the pick-up a little. Some things work easily, but I'll put it this way. I'll bet it can be done. It's like doing your Master's degree. It will likely take a couple of years, a few thousand dollars, and much research, notes, and fabrication, and when done, it has to work. Your have to be the sort of person willing to take an expensive risk and have lots of skills and time. If you can do the work yourself, it's one thing; if you have to pay, it's likely going to cost more than a four year degree. Have fun! Good luck!
