It is not the GT that was send to South Africa.
It was the standard Glas 1700, that received BMW badges all around, got the 1800 motor and was launched on the South African market in 1967-1968 as the 1800 GL (Glas Limousine) by the importer called ERAD (Euro Republic Automobil Distributors). In 1967 the cars were imported as "Completely knocked Down" kits. As of june 1968, all presses and other production equipment went to South Africa (Durban). The car had by the way the steering wheel on the right...The car was renamed shortly afterwards to 1800 SA (South Africa). The 2 liter engine in the same body as of 1970 gave the 2000 SA. As of 1973, both models were restyled. The front was taken from the E3 series, and the back was restyled and became a mixture of the backside of the 5-series E12 and the original GLAS 1700 backside. With the restyling, the models were now called 1804 and 2004, and were produced from 1973 to 1975. About 12000 cars of the latter model were assembled and sold in South Africa and Rhodesia. There was also an assembling plant in Rhodesia. Their cars had the name Cheetah. Total sales for all types: about 20000. Cheers, Tom
