| Message: | I built a 260/6 gearbox out of 2 old ones and a bunch of new parts. In terms of new parts I mean most of the bearings and the synchromesh of the second gear. Reused parts were measured before used (according to the Bentley Repair Manual) and found well within specification. This box is now sitting under my car and has 2 problems: - On the prescribed SAE80W oil it tends to rattle and knock when warm. - The 2nd gear is quite hard to shift when cold (taking into account that the synchronizer is brand new). I can "fix" the hard shifting issue by filling the box with ATF DII, but then the the rattling becomes very anoying. I can "fix" the rattle completely by filling her up with 85W140 (almost sirup), but then 2nd gear becomes a problem when cold. So I have 2 questions: - is the rattle cause by excessive axial play on the layshaft? This is an issue I may have overlooked when putting the box together. Ony other possible cause? - why is the shiftquality of the 2nd gear dissapointing? When warm it is doing just fine. | ||||
