Getrag 260/5 salvage unit. Good or No Good? (280 views) (496 thread views)
Message:
I am replacing the getrag 260/6 transmission in my '88 528e with a salvage yard unit. I would appreciate some insight into how I might verify the condition of the salvage unit prior to installation.

I can tell you this about the salvage unit:
- No metal or shavings in the unit, just a small bit of grey sludge.
- Input and output shafts turn freely with only slight play.
- It appears to be very clean inside and no visible damage to any gears when "inspected" through fill and drain plugs with a bright telescopic light.
- I can only run the shift-shaft paralell to the transmission in three positions which are...All the way in = 1.00:1.00 input to output rotation, halfway in + neutral, and all the way out = 1.00:1.00input to output rotation. I cannot seem to turn the shift shaft to the left or right which I believe is necessary to find the other gears.

Any insight or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thank much. Tim
