| Message: | I noticed the plastic nipple at the top driver's side of the radiator was leaking. I remembered this post: nipple post and went and got the part. When I replaced it, the old one crumbled apart like burned toast. Very scary because parts can fall into the radiator chamber. This is a 1998 with 88Kmi. Here is the procedure for replacement. 1. get the part and a new band clamp 2. remove the two rivet cores that hold the shroud, remove the rivets 3. unscrew the overflow tank bleed screw 4. remove the clip that attaches the tank to the shroud 5. lean the tank back and pull up the shroud on the driver's side [no need to remove tank or dismantle air components] 6. suck out coolant to below top neck level if it didn't evaporate 7. very gently unscrew the top neck radiator hose clamp, remove hose 8. stuff a rag into the radiator chamber under the nipple to catch broken tabs 9. reach into the radiator neck and push the three tabs together and push up. 10. remove nipple clamp, and reverse procedure with new part Now if your nipple is like mine, it will crumble apart when you do this (see photos). I needed to pull parts out of the hose (crush with pliers and pull broken-off core out, or replace hose) and pull parts out of the top of the radiator. When this happens, it means that the temperature cycles have taken their toll on the plastic, and I bet the radiator neck isn't far behind (although it seemed strong). New radiator is going in soon. ![]() ![]() 98 740i d e a d s t o c k | ||||
