| Message: | Click this link to see a diagram of how to remove the rear "quarter window" shades from 3/16/04: rear window shade removal (quarter window shades) If it's difficult to understand the diagram (see diagram below)...you can see in the larger circle on the lower left...there is a metal clip that screws into the door frame....this clip secures the shade at the top. Take a thin flat screwdriver and slip under this clip to release the top of the shade...then pull up and out to release the bottom. (it's really easy to remove the shade from the window...and no the window does not have to come apart to fix this...the shade is a one piece assembly that pops onto the door frame. Once you remove the shade...I bet the problem you'll see is that the plastic has disintegrated or cracked at the bottom and doesn't secure the lower rod any more. (see pic below...and ya gotta let me know if I'm right on this one) This causes the shade to lose it's "spring action". If you are handy, this is a simple fix...if not...the shade cost about $70 if you order a new one from the dealer. If you have to pay them to do it...add in at least another hour of labor @ $70-$90 an hour...this is way too much for this simple job. Okay...this is how I fixed mine...I took a soldering iron and a medium sized plastic zip tie. My inspiration was taken from the pic below where this person took a piece of an aluminum pop can and made a template to re-secure the bottom of the shade's rod...I thought since it was plastic holding the tip of the rod...why not do it again. So I manually rolled the shade back up and turned the rod one time (to give it some "spring"). Then lined the rod up correctly and began to melt the zip tie around the bottom of the shade's rod to secure it again. Worked like a charm. The only thing that I regret is not taking pics of it when I did it. But the idea came as one of those rare moments of clarity and I wasn't sure if it was going to work...but it did. I did this back in Nov/03 and it still works. The time it took was about 15 min to figure out how to pop it out and do the melt job...the finished product...."priceless". 8-) (You can see in the pic how the plastic has cracked at the bottom...no longer securing the metal rod that the shade is rolled up on...roll the shade back up and check to make sure it has enough "spring" to re-roll the shade...then melt a plastic zip tie with the tip of a soldering iron. Ignore the silver/yellow/green/white piece of aluminum that the person who took this pic has stuck in the bottom of the shade. That was how he decided to secure the bottom of the rod...unless that is how you want to repair your shade) ![]() (diagram of how to remove rear quarter window shade) ![]() Q 91 735iL (Schwarz-Black)________________97 740iL (Arctic Silver) ![]() my Qsilver7 cardomain site | ||||
