ICE Link PLUS install and first impressions (560 views) (1770 thread views)
Message: OK.. so I saw the ad in BIMMER where they talk about how you can now control the ipod AND read the text in your NAV or radio display. sounds COOL.. been waiting for this

Here are my initial thoughts after finally getting my $300 kit.
Since I have a 2000 740 with DSP I needed the DSP kit.. its the same Radio Shack A/D converter you can buy at the Mall with a couple home made connectors. for 70 bucks (?)

Alrighty then.. lets install it.. wait a minute.. where are the nice instructions? a simple little booklet with the worst set of directions I have ever seen. OK, no biggy.. went to Engineering school.. done a few stereos in my day. So I figure it out after a little while, but for this kind of cash they could do a LOT better. There are NO vehicle specific instructions.
C'mon Dension.. it wouldnt be that hard to find someone to write up a decent sheet on each car.. maybe you could offer a little break in the price in exchange for the use of a vehicle to review. Not even decent labeling or identifying the cables and parts in the kit.

anyway, I will give them the simple award for the fact it connects in place of the CD changer and the A/D converter gets 12 volts form the battery, then plug the ipod into the obvious end dangling in the trunk ( ok, so I havnt figured out how the heck I will snake this damn cable to the front) for now the ipod stays in the trunk, but this will not do for the next reason. So I will have to find a way to get this cable thru the trunk firewall up front.

fortunately nothing hooks up to the head unit. so all connections are in the trunk.

NOW THEN. seems I remember reading about display on the nav system.. the reason I bought this thing.
Well SUPRISE... that aint so folks. sure , you can download a BETA version of some ID3 text crap that gives you an RDS looking scrolling display... but forget using anything else. if you dowload this file and load it as instructed, the text screen over-rides all other functions. thats gotta go.. Lets try the OBC version.. thats the pixels under the speedo..
ok cool so far.... but wait.. now way to stop it. even if you select another screen it comes back... thats annoying. gotta go.. SO.. as far as I am concerned there is NO text.
You still MUST revert to looking at the dinky ipod screen to see whats playing.

AND THEN.... you can ONLY play the first FIVE playlists... WTF ??? oh sure, can set the ipod to shuffle ALL songs and set it in motion... but forget it if you have an album thats playist 6 on.

Sound quality aint that great either. I have an itrip, a cassette thinger and now this. To be honest NONE of them sound as good as a CD changer. NONE. this has a funny thumping sound in the subwoofer speakers when you adjust the volume.. swell.

The ONLY function worth a crap is that you can use the forward and back buttons on the steering wheel to advance a track.. big deal.

so far I am NOT impressed.. Save your money

Bob
