Message: I suggest a trip to the e38.org web site for detailed information. Briefly, the only filter recommended is the OEM filter - there have been performance-related problems attributed to aftermarket filters. As to fluid, a lot has changed since the car was new and Esso was the only option. Many manufactures now state their fluid meets the BMW spec. The most commonly available may be the Valvoline ATF V-Max, but read the info and decide for yourself.
