My kids have also achieved what they have in life because that is their desire. They know hard work has value, and I have always tried to set a good example in that respect. My gifts don't have strings attached, nor are they unreasonable, nor beyond my means.
"Seven years old, 160k miles and not a roundel in sight: I'm good with that." - OK, that's fine and it is your choice. Consider: a seven year old Tahoe has a retail value of about $15K, but a ten year old 3 series has a value of about $8K. How is mine more extravagant just because it has a roundel? That 3 series averages around 24 MPG... the Tahoe? Also, a big vehicle like a Tahoe in the hands of an inexperienced driver may result in a few... oopsies in the parking lot.
Personally, I think you should give your daughter that decrepit 13 year old silver sedan you have sitting around ;-P And don't be a cheapskate when it comes to her senior prom. (Hint - purchase the dress in the off season and get it for 40% off retail.)
