| Message: | Keep in mind I've got a few "minor" engine mods... The surprising part is my car passed w/ flying colors even w/ those mods 2 yrs ago, but barely passed this year. Why? The enhanced smog check (aka Smog Check II) now includes NOx (nitrogen) readings. I registered a 398 out of 409 (max) @ 15mph. 25mph was better with a reading of 261/696. Interesting that the max allowable went up at higher speed, but my car emitted less. I was told that earlier when my engine was cooler, the readings were much lower. Whew! In talking to the smog guy, he said cars like Toyota's generally have no problems passing the new smog check but he's seen an abnormal number of stock BMW's receive a no-pass grade. Well here's my 2004 and 2003 numbers. Anyone w/ a non-VANOS 540i care to post their 2004 numbers so I can see what effect my minor engine mods had? :)
