Message: Wow, someone with a cool head! :) When I started this thread I had no idea it would explode like this.
Of course I'm going to test drive both cars but it's been very helpful to hear comments from longtime owners of the cars, and those who have owned different versions.
Thanks to everyone who chipped-in!
Obviously when considering a car as expensive to purchase and operate as an E39 BMW, the question had better be "do I WANT to afford it", not "CAN I afford it". It certainly seems like the majority of owners love their car even if it visits the shop regularly for expensive repairs. I'll let you know when I find the right one!
