It's nice to have a new prospective member on this board. You will find out that this board supplies tons of information about the E39. Take your time and browse some more here and it will help you in making a final decision.

By the way: I now drive a European 523i from 1997 with a manual transmission and am perfectly happy with the engine power (170HP) and driving chraracteristics although I drove a 1995 E38 750i before. The 750i was great but cost a lot for maintenance, insurance and fuel consumption. I could still afford it but didn't want to spend that much. With the 523i these costs have almost been halved (I have the car for almost 3 years now).
