| Message: | The purpose of the rubber boots are to keep greese in and water and abrasives out. If yours are destroyed the joint will soon follow. Any mechanic that said they looked good is an idiot. I'll bet the rear balljoints are gone at 140K. When I say rear balljoints I mean #2 in this diagram of your rear suspension not the balljoints on the ends of the arms (although those should be tested as well). You should go to another shop that has actual experience fixing E39's and have the rear suspension components tested. Your car may already be unsafe to drive based on what you have described in this thread.
