Had the 50 shimmy in my '97 540 and knew it needed control arm bushings. On other cars in the past I always replaced the whole arm with the bushing installed, but I came across a procedure at the Beisan website for replacing just the bushings in the car. I had all the tools and could borrow the BMW press sleeve so I decided to give it a shot. I was able to get a bushing out but getting a new one in? Not a chance. After about 6 hours of nothing but FAIL I gave up and pulled the control arms. Ordered a set on Ebay for $150 and put them in today and all is well now. I would not recommend trying to replace these bushings in the car, a gear puller is no replacement for a hydraulic press. The process might work with the bushings in a 6 cyl. E39 since the bushings are smaller but I'd be wary to try it.
