ESS 540i Supercharger Dyno Results (long) (63 views) (214 thread views)
Message: For those that had enough of graphs in Calculus, here's the raw numbers:

(Highest Reading) Before/After HP: 249HP/333HP
(Highest Reading) Before/After Torque: 272ft-lbs/312ft-lbs
Highest observed boost on an analog gauge: 7PSI
Air/Fuel Mixture during most recent dyno runs: Just a bit rich, which is safer than running lean.

Both dyno runs were performed on the same Dynojet 248C at Advanced Tuning Products (www.vwturbo.com) in Fremont, CA. There's about a -15(F) degree outside temp differential between my 9/13 and 12/14 runs. Since the runs were performed indoors, the real difference probably isn't as great. The only engine performance mod I had prior to either dyno is a Supersprint exhaust that looks nice, but probably adds 0HP.

My "after-dyno" shows a large (18HP) difference between the two runs. The tech had to use all his skills to keep my auto tranny locked in 3rd gear thru the test. I'm checking with them to see if I need to average the two runs, or if the higher one stands.

Here's the obvious comparison that most will wonder:

VietSB(ESS)/DanB(Dinan)/Jimmy(Dinan) HP: 333HP/371HP/373HP
VietSB(ESS)/DanB(Dinan)/Jimmy(Dinan) Torque: 312ft-lbs/336ft-lbs/336ft-lbs

Something to note is my peak HP shows right after 6100RPM, after which my car redlined or shifted and the test was over. I noticed on DanB's dyno pic that he hit max HP between 6400RPM and 6600RPM. If I install Dinan tranny software, it might allow more revs before shifting and I might be closer in peak HP. Regardless, it looks like the Dinan chart is about 20HP+ above mine throughout the entire RPM range.

At the crank, I've got 401HP using the 17% loss rate and 416HP using the 20% loss rate. ESS quotes 415HP, so I'd have to say they are right on target since most people use the 20% auto-tranny loss percentage.

I've got at least 400HP, so I'm very happy w/ my price versus performance factor. Anyone who's ridden in my car will tell you it's plenty fast and super-quiet. One of the techs at the dyno shop remarked at how he couldn't hear the SC at idle w/ the hood open.

In a few months, I plan to take my car to the same place DanB had his car dyno'd at...just for verification purposes.

E-mail me any questions.

Happy Holidays!
