I replaced my fronts a year or so ago with Textar pads ($34) and Zimmerman cross drilled rotors ($160 pr) and just did the rears today with the same. I have 43k on the car. They do shed more dust than the long lasting pads but they are velvety smooth and responsive with no shake.
I can deal with the dust, it is a pain when the weather is bad and you can'r get the time to really clean them but as far as functionality you get the best feel and ride the whole year round.
Hard long lasting pads get the rotors very hot and they warp. The pads last long but the stopping power and the damage heat does is not a trade off I want.
