My Engine Too - BMW M3 (E46 M3) Message Board & Forum

I had a similar problem at about 3,500 miles, never told the real cause - only that there was metal in #6 cylinder. BMW's decision to completely replace the engine was prompt, but it took about a month to get a new one. Dealer service was excellent.
