| Message: | | The clattering noise in my engine (with 6,200 careful miles and a by-the-book break-in) turned out to be a bad rod. It appears to have damaged the crankshaft and bearings. The dealer wants to order the parts (crank, rods, bearings) from Germany and repair the engine. Service manager claims to have investigated the possibility of a new engine and to have been told by BMW that none are available.
I am wondering whether to accept a repair and what my options are. Here are my major concerns:
1. The M3 engine is unusual. It is handbuilt in Germany. My dealer's technicians are unlikely to have been trained in the kind of high-tolerance work the M3 enigine demands. It's a small dealer - they are also unlikely to have much experience doing major work of any kind on M3s. Can I trust the dealr to do the repair correctly? How will I know?
2. What else was damaged? Even if the repair is done properly, can I ever trust the engine again?
3. What happens to resale value when I produce the repair records and they show this major work this early in the car's life?
What else should I consider? Is it unreasonable to demand a new engine? If BMW refuses, what next? What would you do? Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how was it resolved?
