| Message: | Just got back from checking out the extent of the damage at the dealer's service dept. Christ what a mess! Holes in both side of the block; rod sticking out; can't find one piston yet! Induction system has to be replaced secondary to metal damage, and the cats may be ruined also. It appears that the rod bearing on cylinder 5 on my car let loose. The tech said that it had been suffering "heat damage" for some time and was bound to fail sooner or later. The additional stress at the track made it detonate sooner probably and in a much bigger way, i.e. if it had failed while cruising on the street, I may have just heard severe 'knocking' noises before the engine shut down. Surprisingly, the computer reads the rpm's at 4800 when it failed. I thought it was closer to 6500-7000 rpm, but the tech said that while 4800 was the last reading it "may" have revved slightly higher before completely blowing. As per usual, they are sending the DME Fedex to BMW NA overnight, where more complete data can be downloaded, i.e. max revs experienced, for how long etc. This cannot be accessed by your local dealer. Hopefully, since my car is an SMG equiped car, there will be no hesitation on BMW's part re: warranty coverage. They have already authorized a rental car for me for the duration of the work, so I'm confident they'll stand by their product, (esp. since this is my 3rd new BMW in 7 years, and I'll probably be one of the first with a new E60 M5, especially if it does have a 5 litre V-10 with SMG III). Take care all, and remember if you hear the slightest 'mechanical knocking' noise that you've never heard before, call Road Side Assistance rfn, (right [Oops!]-ing now). thebishman | ||||
