| Message: | Jason, Just got back from the dealership where I went to buy some oil for the new ride. The parts manager took me back to the shop to see my 'old' engine which had been pulled from the M3, (new one not installed yet, still waiting on some parts). The block had been holed on both sides. One side has an approx. 5-6 inch dia. hole blown out, the other side has a 1-2 inch dia. hole. Induction system ruined from 'shrapnel', as were the cats. New info is that 'shrapnel' also destroyed part of the SMG control module that resides on the left side of the engine, hence that has to be replaced also. Total cost, (so far), approx. $20K!! Interestingly, my DME showed that during the life of the car, (3750 miles), it had spent 16 seconds at 8400 rpm. There's that damn 8400 figure again. I can not for the life of me remember hitting the rev. limiter except for once or twice and that was for no more than a second or two each time. I am certainly thinking that the car is in fact not limited at 8K, but may be allowed to rev. slightly higher; either that or the electronic controls on the limiter need to be modified so that the car in fact can not exceed 8K. If you'd like, I'll run back over to the dealer's tomorrow with my digital camera and spend you some pics. of the trashed engine; pretty impressive!! Take care all, thebishman | ||||
