If BMW continues to expand SMG across more models and share components (for obvious cost savings), then the unit price for application-specific pumps, relays and switches will diminish. Theoretically, dealership support will improve in parallel as the SMG fleet expands.
Labor will always be on an increasing gradient though, but i imagine many enthusiast sites will take up the slack for DIY's. Similar to the examples you cite, the 8-series had a lot of issues- mostly electrical (2 batteries and the voltage must be kept at a precise level or all kinds of wacko things begin to happen). But there are many active e31 fans who have stepped up to support the arguably most-timeless design of BMW coupes.

The issue of nikasil engines is probably comparable to SMG cars that are idled. IIRC, BMW continued to replace bad blocks long after the grace period ended. It remains to be seen if BMW will honor such issues for SMG- tho SMG is less costly and likely easier to service than an engine block.
