Will there be some maintenance cost in SMG? Sure. Same can be said for replacing clutches and gearboxes in stick shift cars due to driver inputs that the SMG can prevent.
I actually agree that at least some folks will have a bill or two to pay where an SMG actuator or pump or relay needs to be replaced and it's expensive.
But so far, SMG has been pretty reliable except for the batch of ones with bad relays in 03. From where I'm standing, the engine and the differential are far less reliable than the gearbox.
When you're paying $1k a year in tire costs, does the somewhat distant risk of a $500 SMG actuator or relay replacement every few years really put the car into a "can't afford to maintain it" category?
