| Message: | | Nikisil wasn't a case of the car's mechanical components failing or wearing out early. It was a case of the lining of the cylinders being coated by a substance that was not compatable with US fuel or compression ratios in the US engines, if my memory serves me correctly. That's just a defective manufacturing process.
By the way, I used to work with a guy (as of less than six months back) that had an affected 740i, and BMW was giving him all kinds of trouble over the Nikisil engine. His gripe was that the car was sold as a CPO'd car through a BMW dealer, the warranty expired, no engine coverage...bottom line is that they wanted to hand him a $12,000 bill for a remanufactiured engine. It doesn;t sound like they were taking care of his problem well at all...he now drives an Acura, by the way.
