A separate chain with hooks is added to the winch cable forming a 'Y', so that the winch cable goes down the center of the vehicle, then branches out in two to hook into both openings. This will get the car on the flat bed with no problems, and perfectly centered. Once on the flatbed, an astute tow truck operator will then criss cross two hold down chains under the vehicle forming an 'X' with both openings, then take up the slack in both chains to secure the vehicle. If done correctly, the chains do not touch the undercarriage anywhere, and the vehicle can not bounce around, as there are opposing forces holding it into place. I was very fortunate to have been towed by a real pro.
