I think electric power steering is analogous to I drive: Neither serves a purpose; both detract from driving pleasure; neither is liked/preferred by anyone. Yet they are both forced upon the consumer by a company that is afraid that cars devoid of techno gee whiz gizmos won't sell.
To go off on a big tangent....I'm very disappointed that the 1 Series is not available without I-drive. Since I own the only two BMWs available without I-drive, it probably indicates that all BMWs will eventually have it regardless of what people want. Therefore, I probably will never buy another. My next car will probably be a Lotus. I think I could learn to embrace the rattles, creaks, and noise. I don't think I'll ever learn to embrace all this electronic nonsense that distracts from driving pleasure and creates serious reliability problems.
It really is a shame........So close......
