| Message: | Hi everyone, I lurk from time to time but don't post often, but I had a few questions I know someone here can probably answer! I have an '04 Z4 (2.5), and while I was driving home the other day, I noticed that the passenger mirror glass looked wobbly. When I got home, I could see it was loose. I tried to gently lift it out of the mirror housing, but the minute I touched it, it fell to the driveway and shattered. What's left behind appears to be a thin, plasticky layer that had the glass epoxied to it. BTW, these are non-heated mirrors. I called my dealer (I'm still under CPO warranty) and they won't fix it under warranty, so I started pricing replacement OEM glass. I've gotten prices ranging from $160 (my dealer) all the way to $260 (independent BMW repair shop--who by the way advised me that he would be able to get me an entire mirror assembly for less). So I have a few questions for anyone this may have happened to: 1. I've seen many aftermarket retailers selling replacement mirror glass in the $25-40 range for the Z4. Anyone have any experience with non-OEM mirror glass, or recommendations for good retailers? 2. This plasticky layer that's now exposed under the glass....should it be peeled of before the install of the new glass? I can't tell if it was originally part of the glass, or if it is part of the housing assembly itself. I'd hate to invest in new mirror glass (especially an OEM piece) and epoxy it on to something that may be a problem later. I can take a pic of this if someone needs to see it. Thanks in advance!!
