I, too am having a problem with my passenger mirror. I haven't really looked in to it yet, except for getting a price from a friend. $200.
My mirror looks like it is losing the night time tint and it is getting a bit fuzzy to see anything out of it. It is still on the car, though.
So, I can't help you with the plastic think you mention.
I have a 03 2.5i Z4.

2.5i Maldivas Blue, Tan top/interior, Step, convience & Premium packages.
