Message: putting this same question up on other BMW forums incase someone does have direct experience.

However, overall, it sounds like you've got a dodgy gearbox. My initial reaction is to point you to FAB Direct and get yourself a 'new used' gearbox out of a dismantled car.

Other things to consider, maybe take it to one of those places that can check the electronic control unit, seeing as it's intermittent, it could be a software issue? even more mundane it could be a resistor or some part of a circuit has been damaged/melted/snapped off or something causing this 'sometimes' ok sometimes 'not ok' scenario. It could be even more mundane that the gearbox needs a service and cogs, oil, bearings etc etc changed.

I have a 03 530d touring auto, and have noticed on cold start, selecting reverse and then D takes quite a long time - 2-3 seconds, but once warmed up is absolutley fine (probably just needs oil topup) as it's a high miler 160K now, if/when it does give up, I'm just going to bung in a used gearbox from FAB Direct.

This UK board is quite slow in terms of activity, other UK based forums are quicker, however I suggest you post this on the Z3 specific board to increase your chances of a response!

Cheers! Dennis! West London UK!
