Re: OIL VISCOSITY 5W / 30W (breakdown) (119 views)
Message: got into this "viscosity" issue back when my Studebaker Avanti engine fried...back in 71 or so... infact that was my last American car.. then I went into these things..

I am not a pro on this but... as it was put to me 5W /30W means it will not get thinner than 5W (weight) when its hot and thicker than 30W (weight) when its cold... I was always under the prior belief it was just the opposite... because I figured you'd want it thicker when its hot for better protection. Daaaaaaa....... seems they don't make oil to do that..

what gets me on our coupes is we have this built in oil change interval graph which tells us whjen to get an oil change. It comes on at 15,000 mile intervals.... but.... why is it all other cars are changing thier oil , even sythetic, at anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 mile intervals.... is it a deathwish BMW has incorporated on us or what?
