single to dual airbag swap (87 views) (193 thread views)
Message: I am installing an pre-99, single stage wheel on my 2001 Roadster. The wheel I will be using comes with a single stage airbag.

My car comes with a non-multifunction M-sport dual airbag. There are two ingniters, each of which would need an individual dummy load if I were to use a aftermarket wheel, so I don't set off the airbag light. If you're reading this, you probably already know...

Question 1:
What is the load for each individual igniter. What I've read one place suggested a 3.3 ohm resistor, but I think that is for a single stage.

I've read elsewhere 2.0 to 2.2. Does someone have the spec on this?

Related Questions to the swap:
Which coil goes to with which stage?
One is marked in my Bentley as ABF and the other coil ABF2, but I wouldn't want to bet that ABF2 meant airbag igniter stage 2 without checking.

Also, which stage is for cataclysmic head on collisions -- Stage one or stage two. Again I would guess stage 2, but I don't like guessing.

Finally, any wiring suggestions? My thinking was only to hook up the "cataclysmic" stage, as a harness I'm putting in will take care a lower speed impacts.

However, if the system is sequential (low impact fires THEN then high impact fires), it may not be possible to only wire the high impact stage.

In that case I could split wires coming off the pre-99 single stage slip ring -- 2 into four. But I will still need the dummy loads as I am betting the single airbag that comes with the wheel does not match the two individual loads going into the SRS module.

Suggestions to help me complete this project are greatly appreciated. Once I get it all wired up and pretty looking, with the airbag light off, I'll post pics and THEN you can tell me why I shouldn't do it!

ps. I've been told a multimeter to an airbag could set it off. It doesn't not make sense from my point of view. That would mean the airbag would fire when the ECU ran its check, which I would guess is done in much the same way a multimeter reads resistance. Thoughts?
