Most cars are running solo.
If you were to calculate the per passenger mpg over the life cycle of the car, I'd bet, based on typical usage, any average Z3 rating would compare very favorably against the life-cycle-per-passenger mpg of nearly all mid to full size SUVs. I will acknowledge, that is hard to prove though.
In my not so humble opinion most of the large SUV and 3/4 & 1 ton P/U owners really don't need anything that large, but it is their right... and we all pay for our excesses.
By the way, I just got back from the feed store in my Dodge turbo Cummins P/U.
