I moved to France about a year ago and pay a lot more than $4.00 gallon. Try approx 1.54 euros/liter or $8.75 a gal. The average car is quite small here but my Z3 I brought with me fits in well. Most people also have a bigger one for trips where the speed limit is 130 KM/HR or 80 MPH. Except in Germany where the posted limit is just a suggestion.
Lowering the speed limit isn't the answer. The only solution is pay more, drive less or drive a smaller car for the around town trips. Then drive what you want on the highway and pay for the privilidge. It works well here and people don't complain about the price as much as they do in the US.
