new radio for 1.9 needs ALL new wiring AND amp??? (182 views) (952 thread views)
Message: As I posted earlier, post-Prototipo installation, the radio is not working of course and the code didn't bring it back to life. Went to the dealer who told me everything I already knew so then they said they could do a diagnostic on it for $150. I can get a decent new head unit for that. I've also got the bad backlight connection that so many have experienced. I'm not handy enough or patient enought to fix that and there's a local guy who specializes in fixing German car radios (guess there's quite a need) who says he'd do THAT fix for $150. So...I'm thinking, time to get a new head unit with an iPod dock. Best Buy's installer said no probelm, recommended a Pioneer unit but then I couldn't get anyone to help me in the store...amazing! I left and called a small shop/installer who told me I can't replace just the radio in this car--I'd have to replace the unit, ALL the speaker wires, ALL the speakers AND possibly put in an amp. HUH??? I did a search here and didn't find anything about that...can anyone tell me definitively if this is necessary and, if not, recommend a unit that would be comparable to stock or a step better. I'm not an audiophile, I don't want to spend a ton of $$, I don't need HD or bluetooth, I just want something with at least as good sound as the Business Alpine that's OEM, with an iPod dock and no need for rewiring or speakers (I already upgraded those anyway to Infinity) or an amp. I've got a BMW 6 disc CD changer in the trunk that they say will be obsolete with the new unit as well. THANKS.
