On my car, 81 528i, the sun roof motor drives sliders in the sun roof tracks. You actually get the sun roof to the right position by rigging how the sun roof bolts to the sliders, not changing where the sliders stop. Procedure was in my Haynes' manual.

If you need to adjust where the motor stops in your later model, it's different from the e12 cars.
