I have done this conversion. In addition to the Getrag 265, you will also need the shift tower and linkage and also the driveshaft that comes with the 5-speed. The 4-speed driveshaft is too long and either must be shortened and rebalanced, but it is easier to just use the one that goes with the 5-speed. While you are at it, if I were you, I would go ahead and replace the rear engine seal while you have the thing apart and unless you can verify that the Getrag 265 you are getting has been recently rebuilt, I would also replace the seals on it as well (it has 3 seals - front seal, rear seal, and shifter input shaft seal). Good Luck!

I just bought a mint 79' 528i after having several 2002s. I converted one 2002 in an overdrive 5-speed and remember that a few different gearboxs would work, but only the Gertag 235? acually produced overdrive in 5th gear. I would like to dump the revs in my new car for highway travel. I have read that the final drive ratio on the 528i with a 4-speed and the 530 with a 5 speed is the same 1 to 1. I am not looking for more power, just a quieter, more fuel efficient ride at 75 mph. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Petersson

'85 E28/E24/ with 3.5L M30 Big Six. This is the overdrive 5-sp and should bolt up to your engine without problems. It also has the mechanical speedometer drive you'll need.
