528e Weaknesses? (archive)

Looking at a 1983 528E to purchase for my daughter. Need a larger and safer car than my 2002 for her. I am not familiar with the 5 series, and need some guidance. Car is original owner, well maintained. 5-speed. 220,000 miles, burns a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. Owner say compression is good. Is this car due for a lot of expensive engine, transmission, and suspension work in the near future, or will it hold up and be reliable? I know these are tough questions, but I appreciate any guidance you can offer. Thanks.
