If you are actually going to buy the car, I would surely consider having it towed home (only 40 miles?) There is a lot of prep work that should be done on a motor that has not run in 8 years. You might make it home, but you might also be buying a new motor if you try to get it started and then drive it that far with the gunk that may be in the engine.
