I own a 3 series (e21) with a 3.5 litre engine from a 1979 euro 635 CSI. The car drives fine, but the engine idles at around 1700 rpm. This engine, with the early type intake manifold, has got an air-valve located under this manifold. Two hoses run from it. One to the throttle body, the other to the intake manifold. When I pull both the hoses off the air valve and plug them, the engine idles at 850 rpm. Is the valve bad, or am I looking at another problem. Keep in mind that before this 3.5 block went into the e21 it has been completely rebuilt, so the problem might be something completely different. All comments on this matter would help.
