I own a 3 series (e21) with a 3.5 litre engine from a 1979 euro 635 CSI. The car drives fine, but the engine idles at around 1700 rpm. This engine, with the early type intake manifold, has got an air-valve located under this manifold. Two hoses run from it. One to the throttle body, the other to the intake manifold. When I pull both the hoses off the air valve and plug them, the engine idles at 850 rpm. Is the valve bad, or am I looking at another problem. Keep in mind that before this 3.5 block went into the e21 it has been completely rebuilt, so the problem might be something completely different. All comments on this matter would help.Yes, most likely the cold start valve is bad. This is fairly common with pre 80' M30 engines.
To update your car to the later type you need the valve cover/cold air bypass valve and the hoses.
BTW you will probably have to relocate the water temp sender(s) etc from the early engine to the thermostat housing like the 1980-81 cars did.

PS : I bet that car is fun to drive!
